Why use VAT penalty Experts?
HMRC are getting tough on VAT returns submitted incorrectly. Increasingly penalties will be imposed by HMRC when an assessment has been issued to rectify any error or inaccuracy in your return. You may have volunteered the information yourself or the error might have been found by HMRC on a routine visit from an inspector. The penalty will vary depending on the circumstances (which HMRC often refer to as the ”behaviour”) which led to the error, but it can be significant. Indeed the standard penalty starts at 30% where HMRC considers the behaviour to have been “careless” and 70% for a deliberate error. That said, HMRC are required to give a discount to reflect how the disclosure was made, the assistance they received in dealing with it and the steps taken to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Finally, if that wasn’t enough HMRC can (and do) publicise details of taxpayers for serious cases of a deliberate error or a significant penalty over £25,000.
We will use our wealth of experience and the inside knowledge of how the system works gained through working on both sides to negotiate on your behalf with a view to maximising the discount available against the penalty and depending on the circumstances we may even be able to get the penalty withdrawn or suspended.
